They Better Be Jmb-lying About Jmblya Ticket Prices

Jmblya is a one day music festival in Dallas, Austin, and Houston that starts ticket sales as early as five months before the day of the event, and buyers who purchase their tickets  when the ticket sales start, don’t know the line up, but they are only paying $25.

Dallas is having Jmblya at Fair Park on May 4, 2018. On December 15, 2017, Jmblya started selling “Early Bird” tickets at $25 for about a week until they sold out. Consumers willingly bought tickets without knowing the line up because the price was so low, resulting in the shortage of Early Bird tickets. This shortage demonstrates how the low price caused a high demand for tickets. As a result of consumers buying all the Early Bird tickets, General admission then went up to $50-$60.

Prices for general admission and the various packages including: The “Pinky Ring” ($149),  “Gator Boots” ($169),  and “Fur Coat” ($299) remain constant for about two weeks until Jmblya’s official twitter announced that with every round of the line up reveal, the general admission ticket prices would go up.

Round one announcements were on February 2 2018, making prices rise from $60 to $65. People who liked the artists announced in round one, were willing to pay an extra $5 to go see an artist they like. This rise in ticket prices and people still buying tickets shows how the consumers demand is elastic and they are willing to pay the extra money. This could also show the rise in demand as people try to get tickets before prices rise again.

Round 2 was announced on February 5 2018, bumping up general admission to $70. This had the same impact in ticket sale as the last announcement, creating a higher demand for a cheaper ticket before the prices rise again.

The final announcement, on February 9, 2018, general admission ticket prices went up another $5. With the headliner announced, people will feel encouraged to attend Jmblya. The final announcement will create a shift in demand depending on how much people want to see the headliners.

While general admission prices were rising, the VIP packages remained at the same price. The VIP tickets promote things like: Jmblya hats, shirts, bandanas, access to the VIP bar and restrooms, which would make demand higher for the more expensive packages because consumers would be getting more for better price.

Automatic Voter Registration

images.jpegVoter registration should be easier in order to get a bigger turnout in the next election. A possible way to make bigger voter turnout would be to convert to automatic registration. This would be easier and has made voter turnout greater in states like Oregon. By automatically registering eligible citizens, people would feel more inclined to vote because they don’t have to go through the registration process.

In states using automatic voter registration, there have been a significant change in voter turnout. Automatic registration would ensure a bigger turnout by securely adding people when they become eligible. It would also cause less problems and make the entire process easier. This would also help people who want to vote by not having to worry about deadlines.

Overall, places with automatic voter registration could potentially raise voter turnout among young voters with easier registration. Voter turnout for ages 18- 29 is lower than other age groups because of voter registration, and changing the process could make young voters want to cast a vote for an election.

Some of this confusion is making younger voters hesitate in registering because they don’t want to worry about re registering when they move. Automatic registration would also come with changing your address when the renew their driver’s license. With Oregon’s use of automatic voter registration, voter turnout for people under the age of 30 went up 7% from last election, showing an significant change in voter turnout due to automatic registration.

Another issue is young voters not fully understanding the process or being misinformed. Automatic registration could fix this confusion when they are automatically registered when they renew their driver’s license. Because the system is changing in some states, people want to see how efficient the new process is, which also gets higher voter turnout. By changing to automatic registration, people will become curious and want to see how the new registration works and will find this to be an easier process of voter registration, and in turn, more people will feel inclined to vote.

Who can work at Hooters

Stated in the first amendment, we have the “right to assemble,” meaning that private organizations can hire whoever they want to represent their brand. However, the 14th amendment states that everyone should have “equal protection,” meaning that everyone controlled under a public or state-run organization should be treated equally and given the same opportunities despite their religion, gender, race, etc.

When looking into the case of a man who wanted to work at Hooters and was denied brings up the possible conflict between the two amendments. Some believe that because the fourteenth amendment guarantees equal protection and should provide everyone with the same opportunities, Hooters shouldn’t be able to deny this man of a job. Because the fourteenth amendment talks about state-run organizations, Hooters decision to only hire women as waitresses does not go against this amendment.

Hooters is a private organization, therefore they reserve the right to assemble and can hire only women because that’s the way Hooters chooses to represent their restaurant. According to “Bona fide occupational qualification,” Hooters can choose to only hire women as waitresses and not be required to hire both men and women.

Looking further into this particular case, one would think that because of the fourteenth amendment, that Hooters wouldn’t be able to do this without some repercussions. Hooters did decide to make “gender neutral” positions, but they still only hire female waiters to maintain their tradition of having Hooters Girls.

There have been about 4 men suing Hooters because of their legal choice to only hire women, yet to deal with backlash, Hooters decides to open spots for men like bartenders and hosts. This shows that even though what Hooters is deciding to do is ok, the restaurants still need to deal with the public backlash.

Hooters choosing to only hire women is a legal action because it maintains the ideal of the first amendment and cannot be shut down by the fourteenth amendment because Hooters is not state-run organization and because of this, they are not abridging any law that would deprive anyone of state laws.

See the Bubble, Be the Bubble, Pop the Bubble

online-filter-bubble

The filter bubble happens when a website, or even Google, uses complex algorithms to filter search results that best suit you based on past searches or sites you visit often. The Filter bubble prevents us from seeing everything, and limits the results to what the internet thinks you want to see. This affects how we see government. For example, if someone is a democrat, sites and certain social media’s feeds only present those views instead of trying to educate the individual on a political event. It creates ignorance and a block between the political parties which causes confusion and conflict. This could be problematic in a growing presence of youth on social media.

The filtering of current or political events for something more lighthearted could directly affect the way younger generations understand what’s happening around them, and in turn, affect the future of our country. Filter bubble promotes the idea that your view is the only, or right view, which causes problems when trying to have a discussion with people who disagree with you.

As a nation, it is our job to be good, law abiding, and educated citizens, and the filter bubble may cause some confusion and refusal to accept others opinions or make the ability to open up your mind. Places from Facebook to search engines like Google filter the internet to show what they want you to see, regardless of what you need to see, and this affects how you perceive things or how you understand what’s going on locally, nationally, or globally, which could negatively impact our nation in the future. However, stopping the filter bubble can be difficult as we tend to only read things that make us happy or what we agree with. It is crucial that as a growing nation we collectively and individually look into the topics that are hard for us to read. This includes politics that may be discouraging to read or understand.

As Eli Pariser explains in “Beware Online ‘Filter Bubbles’”, the filter bubble is like junk food, and we all love junk food no matter how “bad” it is for us. In order to stop ignorance caused by “junk food” results, we need to take a look into “healthy foods” which would be trying to maneuver around the filter bubble. It’s going to be hard to step away from junk food results and start a healthier outlook even though we know junk food results are bad for us, or easier to understand. Our minds are constantly ingesting information that we see online, and it is important that we are giving our minds an even balance of impulsive easy information and information that may be hard to take in.

In order to pop the bubble we must be willing to look at other perspectives and views. Doing this means doing more research on certain topics that may be hard for you to read, but it is necessary for us to pop the bubble that we so comfortably live in. This will create an understanding and take a smaller step to removing ignorance from our online presence as well as being more educated politically and otherwise.
